Subject: (dsh-discuss) crazy in Kathmandu

You guys won't appreciate this, but this is insanely crazy fun for a
geek. (1) I'm puppeteering the Lucknow phone computer from a hole in
Kathmandu to appease Khomeini! Get it to call X and give the reply to
Y etc. (2) It's pouring in Kathmandu now. Electricity of at least
the whole block is cut. There's this tiny hole in the wall that still
has its broadband modem up (but it doesn't have the juice to power its
own computers). So I asked the owner to let me plug his broadband
line into my laptop so I can use my laptop to puppeteer the phone
system in cow town! It's pouring and it's dark and it's surreal! :)

-----

Anyways...

I set the Khomeini message as a "personalized" message for Sharda.
And then immediately triggered a "dial now" to Sharda. Alas, Sharda
didn't pick up.

No matter. Her next slot is 11am Thursday---meaning she will get a
call tomorrow morning and if she picks it up then, she'll hear the
Khomeini message.

-----

In the future, this is the kind of stuff Khomeini can do by herself.
This will take some more serious practice.

The following is what Anand can show Khomeini in the future---I don't
expect what I'm saying below to be understood by the Ayatollah.

There are two ways of doing this. Option 1. If you prefer to have a
real conversation with Sharda (with back and forth between you two),
you will use the "synchronous call" feature of the voice system. You
will dial Sharda using your cell phone through the voice system.
Meaning, you dial the voice system first, then you dial Sharda. (This
is the feature I just mentioned last night.)

You might be saying to yourself: this is stupid, why don't I just dial
Sharda directly. Well, if you dial Sharda directly, then the voice
system doesn't get to record your brilliant exchange so we can NOT
share the exchange with others later (that is, if we choose to---we
can always choose to discard it too).

Option 2. Suppose you don't want to get into a real conversation with
Sharda. You just want to record a quick reply for her and that's
that. You would do what the two of us just did. Which is to use your
phone to record a message. Then you go to the web site and send that
message to Sharda. You can tell the system to either send it
immediately, or hold it till she gets an auto-dial tomorrow. (If you
did all this yourself, then I won't be having this crazy surreal
moment in Kathmandu :)
