instructions for playing the MPEG2 files

  • The vanilla Windows Media Player does NOT support MPEG2.
  • If you install a DVD player software, such as PowerDVD, Windows Media Player becomes capable of playing MPEG2 files (because the DVD player software installs MPEG2 codecs, which the Windows Media Player uses.).
  • If you don't feel like using non-free software, an excellent alternative is the free VLC media player. I used this setup binary for Windows. The Linux versions are also excellent.
  • See this page and this page if you're curious about more details.
